As an Advocate and Senior Associate of the firm, Debbie is an experienced litigator with a broad practice across all areas of civil litigation, including professional negligence, clinical negligence and personal injury matters.
She also has extensive criminal law experience having worked on a number of significant and complex cases over recent years. She appears in court at all levels including the Court of Appeal.
Debbie was an integral part of the team acting for the States of Jersey’s insurers in the X Children case, in long running litigation involving historic child abuse and neglect. The case was reported at the time as the largest personal injury case to have ever been brought to trial in the British Isles. It involved family members who claimed damages from the local authority for a failure to remove them early enough to prevent harm. The proceedings concluded with a confidential settlement agreement following a nine week Royal Court trial in the summer of 2018.
Debbie was called to the English Bar in 2001, achieving a Very Competent classification in her Bar final examinations. She is a member of Lincoln’s Inn. After returning to her native Jersey, she was called as an Advocate of the Royal Court in January 2009. Debbie is a Bâtonnier Substitute and so is called upon to assist the Bâtonnier with various matters. She was also a member of the small team of lawyers (headed by the Attorney General) responsible for the drafting and implementation of the new draft Criminal Procedure Law.
